About Amphipods
Amphipods are small crustaceans found in almost every kind of aquatic environment on Earth.
Some live near beaches and coastlines, while others have adapted to life thousands of meters beneath the surface of the ocean.
Deep-sea amphipods are especially important members of Hadal Zone ecosystems because they help consume organic material that sinks into ocean trenches.
What Does an Amphipod Look Like?
Amphipods have segmented bodies with many pairs of legs. Their bodies are often flattened from side to side rather than from top to bottom.
They have antennae that help them sense their surroundings and different sets of legs adapted for swimming, walking, grabbing food, or holding onto surfaces.
Deep-sea species may look pale, translucent, or ghostly because color is not very useful in complete darkness.
Amphipods have been found in some of the deepest ocean trenches on Earth, including places more than 10,000 meters beneath the surface.
The Hadal Zone
Deep-sea amphipods can live in the Hadal Zone, the deepest major region of the ocean.
The Hadal Zone begins at approximately 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) below the surface and includes the deepest ocean trenches.
The water here is permanently dark and extremely cold. Pressure can reach more than 1,000 times the atmospheric pressure experienced at sea level.
Despite these conditions, trenches support communities of amphipods, worms, microbes, sea cucumbers, snailfish, and many other organisms.
What Do Amphipods Eat?
Many hadal amphipods are scavengers and opportunistic feeders.
They consume dead animals, pieces of organic matter, microbes, and other material that reaches the deep ocean floor.
Some species may also hunt or consume smaller organisms.
Being able to eat many different kinds of food is useful in an environment where meals can be rare and unpredictable.
Cleaning Up the Deep Ocean
Amphipods play an important role as scavengers.
When a dead animal or other food reaches the trench floor, amphipods can quickly gather around it and begin feeding.
By breaking down dead material, they help recycle nutrients through the deep-sea ecosystem.
Where Does Their Food Come From?
Plants cannot grow in the Hadal Zone because no sunlight reaches these depths.
Much of the available food originally comes from the upper ocean.
Dead plankton, waste, pieces of animals, and other organic material slowly sink downward. Scientists sometimes call this falling material marine snow.
Ocean trenches can collect some of this material, creating pockets of food for scavengers such as amphipods.
Surviving Crushing Pressure
Hadal amphipods must survive enormous pressure caused by kilometers of water above them.
Like other deep-sea organisms, their bodies contain adaptations that help their cells and proteins function under these extreme conditions.
They also do not rely on large air-filled spaces, which would be difficult to maintain under such intense pressure.
Why Are Some Deep-Sea Amphipods Huge?
Most amphipods are relatively small, but some deep-sea species can grow surprisingly large.
This phenomenon is sometimes called deep-sea gigantism, where certain deep-sea animals grow larger than related species living in shallower environments.
Scientists are still studying why this occurs. Cold temperatures, metabolism, food availability, and other environmental conditions may all play a role.
Life Without Sunlight
Hadal amphipods spend their entire lives in permanent darkness.
Instead of relying only on vision, they can use antennae and other sensory structures to detect movement, chemicals, food, and nearby animals.
These senses help them locate meals even when they cannot see their surroundings.
Amphipods and Snailfish
Amphipods are an important food source for some animals that live in ocean trenches.
Hadal snailfish frequently feed on amphipods and other small crustaceans.
This creates an important connection in the deep-sea food web: amphipods consume organic material and are then eaten by larger predators.
How Do Scientists Study Them?
Reaching the Hadal Zone is extremely difficult, so scientists use specialized equipment to study its animals.
Deep-sea landers can be lowered into trenches carrying cameras, scientific instruments, and bait.
Amphipods often gather around baited landers, allowing scientists to photograph, record, and sometimes collect them for research.
Where Are Hadal Amphipods Found?
Deep-sea amphipods have been discovered in trenches across the world's oceans.
They occur in places such as the Mariana Trench, Tonga Trench, Kermadec Trench, Japan Trench, and other deep regions of the Pacific and beyond.
Different trenches can contain different amphipod species adapted to their particular environment.
Small Animals, Huge Importance
Amphipods may not look as dramatic as an anglerfish or gulper eel, but they are extremely important to deep-ocean ecosystems.
They recycle nutrients, consume dead material, and provide food for larger animals.
Their ability to survive in freezing darkness under crushing pressure also makes them one of the best examples of just how adaptable life on Earth can be.
