About Snailfish
Snailfish are a large family of unusual fish found in oceans around the world. Different species live everywhere from shallow coastal water to some of the deepest places ever reached by fish.
The deep-sea species are especially remarkable because some live inside ocean trenches several kilometers beneath the surface.
Instead of having a heavy, muscular body, many deep-sea snailfish are soft, pale, and almost delicate-looking.
Why Are They Called Snailfish?
Snailfish get their name from their unusual body shape.
Many species have rounded heads and long bodies that taper toward the tail, giving them a soft appearance somewhat similar to a snail or tadpole.
Some snailfish also have a suction-disc structure beneath their bodies that can help them cling to rocks or other surfaces.
Snailfish are among the deepest-living fish ever recorded. Some have been observed more than 8,000 meters below the ocean surface.
The Hadal Zone
The deepest snailfish live in the Hadal Zone, the deepest major region of the ocean.
The Hadal Zone begins at roughly 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) below the surface and extends downward into the deepest ocean trenches.
The deepest known parts of the ocean are nearly 11,000 meters, or about 36,000 feet, beneath sea level.
There is absolutely no sunlight here. Temperatures are near freezing, food is limited, and water pressure is more than hundreds of times greater than at the surface.
Life Inside Ocean Trenches
Most of the Hadal Zone is found inside deep, narrow trenches created where tectonic plates meet.
These trenches form some of the lowest places anywhere on Earth's surface.
Snailfish living here spend their lives in an environment that humans can only visit using specially designed deep-sea vehicles.
How Can Snailfish Survive the Pressure?
Pressure is one of the greatest challenges in the Hadal Zone.
Deep-sea snailfish have soft bodies without large gas-filled spaces such as the swim bladders found in many shallow-water fish.
Their cells also contain special compounds that help proteins continue functioning under enormous pressure.
These adaptations allow snailfish to survive conditions that would damage the bodies of many animals from the surface.
Why Are They So Soft?
A soft body may look fragile, but it can be an advantage in the deepest ocean.
Snailfish do not need thick bones or heavily armored bodies to survive the pressure around them.
Their flexible bodies contain large amounts of water, which is much less compressible than air-filled spaces.
This helps their bodies remain functional even beneath kilometers of seawater.
What Do Hadal Snailfish Eat?
Hadal snailfish feed on small animals living inside deep ocean trenches.
Amphipods and other small crustaceans make up an important part of their diet.
They may search along the trench floor for prey or capture animals swimming just above the sediment.
Where Does Food Come From?
There are no plants in the Hadal Zone because sunlight cannot reach these depths.
Much of the food ultimately begins in the upper ocean and slowly sinks downward as dead organisms, waste, and pieces of organic material.
Ocean trenches can collect some of this material, helping support communities of small crustaceans, worms, microbes, and predators such as snailfish.
Why Are They Pale?
Many hadal snailfish have pale, pinkish, or nearly translucent bodies.
In complete darkness, bright colors provide little advantage because there is no sunlight for those colors to reflect.
Some deep-sea animals therefore have very little pigmentation compared with animals living closer to the surface.
How Deep Can Fish Live?
Snailfish have helped scientists investigate one of the most interesting questions about deep-sea life: how deep can a fish actually survive?
Fish have been recorded at depths exceeding 8 kilometers beneath the surface, but there appears to be a biological limit to how deep ordinary fish can live.
At even greater depths, pressure makes maintaining normal cellular functions increasingly difficult. This may explain why the deepest trenches contain many invertebrates but apparently no fish at their absolute deepest points.
How Do Scientists Find Them?
Humans cannot simply dive down to observe hadal snailfish.
Scientists use deep-sea landers, cameras, remotely operated vehicles, and specially designed submersibles capable of surviving extreme pressure.
Cameras placed on the seafloor can record snailfish swimming and feeding thousands of meters beneath research ships.
Where Are Hadal Snailfish Found?
Deep-living snailfish have been discovered in several ocean trenches around the world.
These include trenches in the Pacific Ocean such as the Mariana, Japan, Izu-Ogasawara, and Peru-Chile trench systems.
Different trenches may contain their own species specially adapted to the conditions found there.
Life at the Bottom of the World
Hadal snailfish prove that vertebrate animals can survive much deeper in the ocean than humans once imagined.
Their soft bodies, unusual chemistry, lack of gas-filled spaces, and ability to feed on small trench animals allow them to live under crushing pressure.
They may look fragile, but snailfish are some of the most extreme fish on Earth.
