He attempts to isolate Jonathan, steal his inheritance, and destroy everything Jonathan loves. Their conflict reaches a breaking point when Jonathan discovers Dio's scheme against George Joestar.
Faced with defeat, Dio uses the mysterious Stone Mask, transforming himself into an immortal vampire.
The ancient mask in the Joestar collection activates when touched by blood. Its hidden spikes pierce the wearer's skull and unlock the full potential of the human body.
The result grants immense strength, regeneration, and near immortality, but at the cost of humanity and a deadly weakness to sunlight.
Dio embraces the mask's power, beginning a supernatural nightmare that spreads beyond the Joestar estate.
Jonathan meets the eccentric Will Anthonio Zeppeli, a master of Hamon, or the Ripple.
By controlling his breathing, Jonathan learns to create energy similar to sunlight. Hamon can travel through living bodies, liquids, metal, and other conductive materials.
With Zeppeli's guidance, Jonathan prepares to confront Dio and the army of undead creatures gathering around him.
Jonathan, Zeppeli, and Robert E. O. Speedwagon travel to Windknight's Lot, where Dio has created an army of zombies.
Along the way, Jonathan faces legendary warriors, monstrous servants, and the painful sacrifices required to defeat an immortal enemy.
Jonathan's compassion remains one of his greatest strengths. Even against his enemies, he recognizes courage and humanity.
Jonathan defeats Dio and later marries his childhood love, Erina Pendleton.
Their peaceful future is interrupted during their honeymoon, when Dio returns aboard the ship carrying Jonathan and Erina to America.
Jonathan makes one final sacrifice to protect Erina and the lives aboard the ship. Although his own story ends, the Joestar bloodline, and Dio's influence, continue.
Phantom Blood establishes the central conflict of the JoJo saga: the Joestar family's struggle against Dio Brando and the consequences of his desire for power.
The Stone Mask represents the temptation to abandon humanity in exchange for strength, while Jonathan represents the strength found through compassion, loyalty, and sacrifice.
